The SAFE designation, created by the Florida Legislature, allows individuals or parents and guardians to voluntarily add a designation to their vehicle registration record indicating that a driver or passenger may have a condition that could affect communication or interaction during an emergency or traffic stop.

About the Program

The designation is intended for individuals with autism, deafness, or other conditions that may impede communication with a law enforcement officer. When a SAFE-designated vehicle is stopped, law enforcement will be alerted through the vehicle’s registration that additional care may be needed during the interaction.

The SAFE designation is entirely voluntary and confidential. It does not appear on a driver’s license or ID card.

How to Apply

To add the SAFE designation to your vehicle registration, visit the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) website or your local tax collector’s office. You will need to provide documentation from a licensed medical professional confirming the applicable condition.
